Scenic Spots and Man-made Attractions
Puerto Princesa’s hilltop locations provide just the right spots and facilities for sightseeing activities.
The Buenavista Viewdeck on the way to Sabang commands a panoramic view of Ulugan Bay, a truly breathtaking sight to behold.
A stopover at the Salvacion Viewdeck provides a respite from the long trip and a visual treat of the splendid view of Honda bay and its lovely islands. The same enthralling vista can be enjoyed at the Sta. Monica Ranch that sits atop the hill overlooking Honda Bay. A stone’s throw away is baker’s Hill, known for its freshly-baked goodies and effigies of wonderland characters. A sweeping scene of the mountains and the surrounding hillside can be viewed on the other side.
The nature park at Sta. Monica Heights is the sight of the government Center including the City Hall, which provide a vast view of the city proper and beautiful Puerto Princesa Bay. The newest place for promenaders and special events is the baywalk Area, great for leisurely walks while enjoying the scenic seas and mountains inclosing the Bay. At the provincial Capitol Grounds is the capitol Park square, a place to wind down and a venue for occasional evening performances. Freedom Park in front of the City Coliseum features an impressive fountains and landscaped grounds great to stroll and to celebrate events and special activities.
At the Enchanted garden kids and grown-ups alike will have fun with its exciting rides and games. At deep forest garden, visitors will delight on the theme garden ambience while enjoying a meal or snack.
The Kuyba Almoneca features a bat cave, a restaurant and a chapel amidst calm surrounding perfect for quite reflections and holy retreats.
The Vietnamese Village in Sta. Lourdes used to be home to the “boat people” or the Vietnamese Asylum seekers who first came to Puerto Princesa in 1979 in their struggle for freedom. Most of them have now been repatriated though. The Viet Ville restaurant, which remain open to visitor offer a variety of noodle flavors and other authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
Devotees and tourists may visit the Nan Hai Fa Yu Buddhist temple in Sabang. Located at the foothills of Mt. Bloomfield facing the vast South China Sea, it houses the Buddha from the well-known Buddhist Temple of Nan Hai Pu Tuo Shan in China. The temple is visited by Buddhist devotees worldwide, but it is open to all who wish to visit or offer a prayer.
Seafood Festival
April 3rd week
A celebration of the bounties of the seas, this gastronomic festival offers a taste of seafood specialties Palawan is known for. Puerto Princesa restaurants prepare a mixture of authentic Palawan seafood cuisine and delicacies, as well as other contemporary seafood-filled culinary delights in the region. The food fest is enjoyed with cultural shows and bundles of give aways
Karagatan Festival.
May 1st
Celebrated during the month of the ocean, the festival demonstrates the synergy of man with the vast seas and the ocean. Held every year in the fabulous beaches of the City’s west coast, the four-day event include a coastal clean-up, boat-sailing, kite-flying, banca race, tug-o-war, beach volleyball and football, sand sculpture, mountain to sea trekking, mountain bike race, film showing, a grand beach party and concert, and capped by a Weskini bikini open.
Pista y Ang Kagueban
June 3rd Week
A festive reforestation activity where citizens of Puerto Princesa City and people from all walks of life flock to celebrate a Feast of the Forest, by planting thousands of different tree species in the city’s denuded forest zones. Related activities are eco-camping, games and contests, and performances by environmental artists. Celebrated annually at the onset of the rainy season, it is the people’s collective performance of its environmental duties of giving back something to Mother Earth.
Bulanbulawan
Monthly Full Moon
Join Puerto Princesa moon worshippers as they revel in the moonlight during the full moon affair of Bulanbulawan (Cuyunon term for ‘golden moon’)The occasion binds Palaweños together to revive an ancient tradition and an expression of the cultural passion, beliefs and aspirations of the people of the islands through their songs and dances, creating a wave of energy between us and our government, and promoting social bonding among the communities.
Baragatan Sa Palawan
June 3rd Week
Baragatan celebrates the foundation of the civil government of Palawan. The festival derives its name from a Cuyunon terms that means ‘meeting’, and true to its meaning Baragatan is a convergence and coming together of the people of Palawan to celebrate its history and rich culture. Highlights of the event are trade and food fair, street dancing, cultural shows of different municipalities, the private sector and the ethnic groups, and the coronation of Ms. Palawan.
City Fiesta
December 8th
Puerto Princesa celebrates its Fiesta on the 8th December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Fiesta activities begin during the first week of December with the series of religious activities. The celebrations extends towards the Christmas season laced with nightly cultural presentation, yuletide activities topped by the lighting of the giant Christmas tree and fireworks, as well as ago-industrial, tourism and food fairs. The combined month-long activity is dubbed as “Pista Na, Pasko Pa”.
